The Civic Mission of Schools is addressed through core curriculum that incorporates civics lessons, service-learning activities, leadership opportunities, and character education elements.

Example
A great example of the civic mission of education in action would be the development of a partnership between a middle school and a senior citizen center.
The middle school teacher can engage the students in a community issue by looking at a topic such as the cost of medicine for seniors. The students can assist the seniors by writing letters for them and helping to balance their checkbooks. In addition, the students can advocate for the seniors by preparing presentations on the cost of medicine for a local hearing at the city council.
The net result is that the students will improve their writing, speaking and arithmetic skills in the course of learning about an important social issue and helping local senior citizens.
