The use of cd-roms and internet sites for this unit is great to:

• Supply information and useful graphics that us teachers don't make ourselves!
The websites and cd-rom are useful both for student access, teacher display on tv or screen, or as printed sheets. (The 3-D drawing site http://www.draw3d.com/ is a delightful extension into art)

• Allow students to explore in somewhat different avenues around a common problem.
If you have capacity for independent online time, or computers for structured lab periods, the Geometry and Drawing, and How Stuff Works sites are quite engaging for students to explore, and to save graphics for their own practice ideas.

• Provide a focused problem for students to use skills for efficient use of digital reference sources.
Students sometimes fall prey to "clicking fever" when the criteria for information search is to wide-open. While text based and boolean searches are extremely useful in research topics, working with single focused sites for dynamic referencing is more appropriate for skill support, as in the Soda Machine case.
