Index of Literary Servers: This is a comprehensive index of literature sources. It includes online books, listservs relating to literature, literature newsgroups, home pages relating to literature, and WAIS databases.
University of Virginia Online Text Center  The Modern English Collection (AD 1500-present)
    1,585 titles including 6,699 manuscript and book illustrations, many of which are publicly
    accessible.  You may search the collection by word, phrase, etc.
Bible Gateway: A search tool for many translations of the Bible.

    Text file (File size is about one megabyte, so download time could be significant if you have a slower modem.)
    Zip file (faster download, but requires WinZip or some such application)

The Scarlet Letter is available in two forms: You should first try the text form.  It is a small file (530 kb) and fits on a floppy disk, but it has problems displaying the formatting with some word processors.  The html form is a larger file (2,880 kb) and will not fit on a floppy disk, but it looks more like pages from the book.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is available in text form.

Jane Austen Information Page
    Contains hypertext editions of her novels and juvenilia, discussion of her characters,
