JAPAN PROJECT
A
project turned in on the date due will receive full credit. A late
project will receive no higher than a C- grade.
1.Make a
Ninja doll
- about 12 inches high, covered in black clothing with tan
colored face
(it must be a stuffed, sewn, fabric doll which YOU
have made)- include 4 weapons or items they used-
Write a 1 page report on ninjas ( history of Ninjas , what they did,
how
they did it,
what weapons,tools,and clothing they used etc.)
No Barbies, Ken, GI
Joe, or craft dolls,
etc.or premade doll clothing or accessories (see Ninja
doll grading scale)
OR Make
a Ninja Poster - show pictures and write captions using your own
words
explaining what a Ninja was,
the history of Ninjas , what they did, how they did it, what
weapons,tools,and
clothing they used etc.
Use at least 10 natural colored pictures each having a
caption
Make the captions artistic with colorful matte backgrounds. (see Ninja
poster grading scale)
If possible, type the words for the captions. Have a large
colorful
title ( 4" high letters)
2. Make
a Colorful
Samurai helmet - large enough to cover your head - with a
decorated
neck guard and cheek guard,
a large colored symbol of something aggressive, a colored
symbol (or two) of something graceful
Write
a 1 page report on Samurai helmets which explains their parts
OR Make a Samurai Doll- it
must be a stuffed, sewn, fabric doll naturally colored which YOU
have made
make the DOLL about 12 inches high- include his
helmet, short sword, long sword, and appropriate armor
Write a 1 page report on samurais of old
Japan
( history of Samurai ,how they trained and fought ,
who they served, information about their armor and their
helmet,
how they relaxed ,
what their favorite religion was,what weapons they used etc.)
Use information from our notes and video too (see Samurai
doll grading scale)
OR Make
a Samurai Poster - show pictures and write captions using your own
words explaining samurais of old Japan
( history of Samurai ,how they trained and fought ,who they
served,
information about their armor and their
helmet, how they relaxed , what their favorite religion was,what
weapons
they used etc.)

3. Make
a poster of a
Geisha doll using 7 dresses and 1 Geisha woman figure -
color the pictures carefully and naturally. Write 8
captions which
tell various different things about a
Geisha of old Japan - Where and how she lived and trained, what her
duties
were, how she dressed , how she
behaved. (use your own words)
Make the captions artistic with colorful matte backgrounds. If
possible,
type the words for the captions
Have a large colorful title ( 4" high letters)

All
parts of the doll must be handmade - no premade doll or doll parts or clothing - no Barbie, craft
doll, prestuffed doll
It must
be a standing doll wearing a Japanese style colorful print kimono
(which you have cut
and sewn)
The
kimono dress must cover her from neck to feet and cover her arms to the
hands,
Hair
must be black and up in a bun in traditional Geisha style (some
hairpins would be nice),
The face and hands and
feet must be white or light tan in color,
She
should be wearing plain sandals,
Her
face should be carefully drawn with small red lips and thin black
eyebrows.
It would be nice to have the doll
supported on a platform or base, you can include a parasol if you
want.
4. Make
a Sumo Wrestling

Explain the sport using pictures and words you understand
(include
how the sport started
and its continuing use of Shinto symbols, what the rules are, the
details
of the ring and ceremonies they use,
how sumos train and how they gain weight, the techniques they use to
win,
their clothing and what the colors mean, the competition/tournament
schedule
and ranking of winners)
Use at least 10 colored pictures each having a caption
(make sure each person's flesh is colored as it appears in real
life)
Make the captions artistic with colorful matte backgrounds. If
possible,
type the words for the captions
Have a large colorful title ( 4" high letters)
OR Make
a pair of tan colored Sumo wrestler dolls ( fully 3
Dimensional
which are stranding in a Sumo ring)
wearing black hair in a top-knot, each wearing a muwashi
competing in a circle arena which looks like dirt or sand-on a colored
solid base platform
use wood (or styrofoam IF YOU COVER THEM
WITH
PAPER MACHE ) for the bodies
attach a 1 page report on Sumo history & details of the sport
5. Make
a Tea Ceremony
explanation poster-
Explain the purpose, the various utensils, the way it is performed - this
is not a report,
but captions explaining pictures which show the details of the tea
ceremony
Use at least 10 natural colored pictures each having a caption
with
words you understand

possible,

6. Make
a Japanese
Traditions poster - showing pictures and captions
of different , interesting customs/traditions of Japan - BE
SURE to give enough detail in each caption
Use at least 10 natural colored pictures each having a caption
with
words you understand
Make the captions artistic with colorful matte backgrounds.
If possible, type the words for the captions
Have a colorful title - Don't make the title too big or you won't have
room for the pictures
7. Make
a colorful Japanese
mask used in either the Noh Drama or Kibuki Theatre
Make
it large enough to fit your entire head, Make it 3 dimensional
( no flat cardboard or paper masks )
Write a 1 page report explaining the Japanese drama your mask is from

8. Make
a colorful Bio
Poster of a famous Japanese person from old Japan
Examples : Tokugawa Ieyasu or Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Explain
the person's
life - birth, early years, accomplishments, later years, death
