William the Conqueror - Classroom notes
1. William was born in Falaise, France. His parents weren’t married. Father was Robert 1st, Duke of Normandy , his mother was
     Arletta , a servant woman.
2. Richard’s  father died and some nobles rebelled against William(about 7 years old)  as the new Duke of Normandy.
3. By 1047, with the help of Henry I, King of France, William defeated the rebels.
4. In 1051 Edward (King of England) agreed that William should be next in line for the English throne.
5. 1053, William married Matilda of Flanders, a descendant of King Alfred the Great.
6. 1064,  Harold, earl of Wessex (England), was shipwrecked on the Norman coast . William helped him and Harold
     swore to support William's claim to the English throne.
7. When King Edward died the royal council elected Harold king of England, not William.
8. William got the  Pope's blessing to invade England and become its king.
9. 1066 William defeated Harold's English forces at the Battle of Hastings.
10. On Christmas Day William was crowned king of England.
11. He gave English lands to Normans and everyone had to swear allegiance to William , but some rebelled - William's
       revenge killed 100,000 people
12. 1072 William defeated Scotland
13. 1086 William took a survey and wrote down all land and property in England in the "Domesday Book" .
14. 1087, during a war against King Philip1 of France,William’s horse stepped on a hot cinder and fell .William was
      injured and died at the age of 60.
15. a. His oldest son Robert became the Duke of Normandy, France
      b. His middle son William II became the King of England for a while
      c. His youngest son Henry I became King of England after William died
           and then became Duke of Normandy after he imprisoned his own brother Robert
